Benefits
Community Benefits
The Lazy Head Project is being developed with the deliberate aim of generating lasting economic and social benefits for the surrounding communities.
Partnership
Direct Economic Contribution
Lasting Impact
Over the life of the 85-year Project, total provincial GDP contribution is estimated at $2.2 billion, of which approximately $1.2 billion is anticipated to be generated within the MODG.
The Project is expected to support an annual average of 75 full-time direct jobs, contributing over $6.5 million in annual payroll into the local economy.
Local Benefits
Two dedicated life-of-quarry community funds have been designed to directly benefit the local community:
- Carver has created up to five different Rightsholder, stakeholder, and community funds that will deliver hundreds of thousands in direct financial support, every year for the operating life of the quarry — approximately 85 years.
- The Project is finalizing a partnership agreement with Seabreeze Campground to explore mutual benefits arising from the operation.
- Local residents will receive first consideration for employment opportunities. The Project’s administrative centre and operating offices will be located within MODG. A job fair will be held prior to construction. All permanent employee training will take place within MODG.
- Annual bursaries will be funded for graduating high school students within MODG. Co-op placements will be made available during construction and operations.
- Local sourcing of goods and services will be prioritized.
Communication
Community Liaison Committee
Open Dialogue
The Lazy Head Project has established a Community Liaison Committee (CLC) — a standing forum bringing together multiple community representatives, as well as representatives of Carver Morien, and MODG to regularly share information, raise concerns, and discuss the Project’s effects and progress.
Committee membership includes representatives from the nearby communities, the MODG, and the project team.
A standing item on every meeting agenda will be community feedback and complaints. The CLC will continue throughout the operating life of the Project.
Connections
Ongoing Engagement
Bringing All Groups To The Table
In addition to the CLC, the Project team is committed to ongoing direct engagement with community members and local groups. This includes:
- Engagement with the Guysborough County Inshore Fishermen’s Association on marine activities.
- Public open houses at key project milestones.
- Direct outreach to nearby residents on specific aspects of Project activities.
- Working with local recreation groups (hunting, ATV, hiking) to develop an access management plan for the Project, including its access road.
- A complaint response process committing the Project to acknowledge and respond to community concerns within 48 hours.
